John Thompson
John is driven by a sense of public service. Following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and uncles, John joined the military and served his country in the 82nd Airborne Division, stationed in Fayetteville at Fort Bragg. After an honorable discharge from the US Army, John attended North Carolina State University, and later Pfeiffer University. He started working in and around politics in the 1990’s.
From his tenure with the American Cancer Society to his most recent endeavor in Medicaid, John’s work has impacted the way in which the State of North Carolina has delivered public services in healthcare. His efforts to help reduce cancer incidence and mortality through screenings and coverage for specific screenings in the public sector resulted in positive health outcomes for millions of North Carolinians. His work in the General Assembly and later his assistance to legislators and officials on public policy helped result in the relatively flat spending trend in North Carolina’s Medicaid budget over the past four years.
John’s understanding of politics and healthcare public policy in North Carolina allows him to continue his public service by helping others. In addition to his work in public policy, John has spent time developing grassroots activity at the state and federal level on issues ranging from healthcare, bankruptcy reform, and affordable housing. In addition to issue campaigns he spent considerable time developing outreach material for mail, radio and television advertisements.
When John is not working he spends his time exercising and reading and with his three sons, Jeff, Jack and Leo. His favorite books are the Iliad, The Odyssey and The Silmarillion. His favorite quote is from Marcus Aurelius, “The secret of all victory lies in the organization of the non-obvious.”
